Apocalypse Now

The warning from the latest IPCC report could hardly be more stark. Mankind is causing irreversible and serious damage to the climate of our planet. The remarkable thing is how little is being done to halt the damage. People are carrying on as before, driving and flying as if there were no tomorrow. The world is crying out for leadership, for leading celebrities and politicians who are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices, and to set an example. Without that leadership there will be no tomorrow. Instead we will set in motion positive feedbacks in the mechanism of our world's climate. Methane hydrates in the tundra permafrost will melt, releasing into the atmosphere gases many more times more powerful than carbon dioxide. There is a real possibility of not just a few degrees warming, but of a runaway greenhouse effect that renders our planet unfit for life. The threat is that serious. The scientists have delivered their message. The time for talking is over. We need action. Now.
