Why MSN is such a good service to join
MSN is a service that many young people use. It is easy, free and helps you to keep in touch with friends, particularly those who live far away from you. Many young people spend a fair amount of time on it, whether they are emailing friends, instant messaging, using the microphone facility or even trying out web cam. It’s a service that most of us really enjoy to use.
Instant messaging, microphone and web cam conversations.
Instant messaging is a service that many people love. Instead of having to send letters to friends, email was invented. Now instant messaging means that you may only have to wait a second or two for your friends reply. Using microphone over the internet is also entirely successful, as you can have a conversation with your friends while doing something else on the computer.
Also if you have broadband (therefore you don’t have to pay for the amount of time you spend on the internet,) then these microphone conversations are just like a telephone call but free.
Using web cam is also a service with msn that young people really enjoy. Imagine not having seen a friend for ages, and all of a sudden you can see them, live on your computer screen. It’s utterly amazing. Believe it or not, you can also combine these two services. This leaves you with a conversation that is basically like you are face to face. You can hear and see the person. What more could you possibly want?
Safety on MSN
However many parents at the moment are arguing that MSN is not safe, as all chat rooms are not. Here at the young people’s section of Ecozine we would seriously like to disagree. Its all very well parents keeping a strict eye on you until around the age of ten, but after that don’t we deserve some responsibility? Do our own parents not trust us to follow the rules that we have been taught up to now?
MSN is unlike other chat rooms, you can not just talk to anybody. People have to ask you to accept them and their email address, and only then can you instant message them, with or without the microphone or webcam facility. We are all sensible enough to only accept people we know. If we receive anything that we think is abusive, then we can block and delete any of our contacts at any time. As usual the golden rule is never give out your home address, or arrange to meet somebody new, though if you’re sensible you shouldn’t be talking to any body you don’t know anyway. Surely an instant messaging service could not get much safer than this?
